Emigrant Fire Containment Grows To 75% Containment

The Emigrant Fire north of Santa Clarita has reached 75% containment as of Wednesday morning.

Angeles National Forest (ANF) officials announced Wednesday that the brush fire, which had been sparked by a burning tractor-trailer on the 5 Freeway Friday afternoon, had spread to 255 acres in size and was 75% contained.

“Firefighters are continuing to construct and improve firelines around the perimeter of the fire.  However, they are being challenged as the remaining area is extremely steep and has numerous sheer downward slopes or “drop-offs,” according to ANF officials.

Planned actions for Wednesday included continuing to construct and improve fire control lines, as well as extinguishing isolated burning vegetation within the fire perimeter, according to the incident report.

“The fire remains a potential threat to a high-pressure natural gas line, power transmission lines, homes in the area as well as interstate commerce on interstate 5,” according to the ANF report.

Wednesday temperatures are expected to reach over 100 degrees with very little wind until the evening, ANF officials predicted.

The Emigrant fire started as a tractor-trailer fire on the northbound Vista Del Lago exit on Interstate 5 near Pyramid Lake, and quickly spread to the brush on Friday afternoon.

ANF officials explained that the fire is named “Emigrant” since the location is in the general area near Emigrant Landing Day Use Area at Pyramid Lake.

All lanes of interstate 5 are open as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, however Vista Del Lago Road and both exits remain closed, according to ANF. Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution in the area.

Additional firefighting resources have been brought into Southern California to support fire suppression efforts. On this incident, ANF has firefighters and apparatus that traveled to assist in suppression efforts from as far as Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Arizona, officials said.
