A deputy-involved shooting was reported Wednesday on the 5 Freeway north of Castaic.
UPDATE (8:15 p.m.): Officials with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department released a statement on the shooting. A deputy from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle and had the suspect exit the vehicle and escorted to the patrol car when the suspect broke free and ran.
The suspect ran up an embankment before getting back into his vehicle where the deputy chased him on foot. An altercation took place at the door of the suspect’s vehicle, with the suspect driving away and dragging the deputy with him.
The suspect crashed through a chain-link fence leading to the southbound I-5 shoulder. He then crashed again through the fence back to the frontage road and a deputy involved shooting occurred where the suspect was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy was transported to a local hospital and has been released. A handgun was recovered at the scene where the suspect was sitting.
UPDATE (3:30 p.m.): Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective are investigating the deputy-involved shooting, officials said.
Officials confirmed the suspect was struck by gunfire. His condition remains unknown, according to law enforcement.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
These include separate investigations by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau, according to officials.
Around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were involved in a shooting on the southbound 5 Freeway near Templin Highway north of Castaic, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“Per Sheriff’s, there is one suspect,” said Franklin Lopez, spokesperson for the Fire Department.
A helicopter responded to the incident to airlift the suspect to the hospital, however, units on scene canceled the aircraft, according to Fire officials.
The deputy involved in the shooting was not injured, and no information regarding the suspect’s condition is available according to officials on scene.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are on scene and have closed the southbound 5 Freeway north of Templin Highway, according to officials.
