9/11 Never Forget: How Saugus High School Honored The Lives Lost 20 Years Ago

Intending to honor the 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, a group of 29 Saugus High School students came together last Friday to participate in the 9/11 Never Forget Project.

Students with the Saugus High School Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) Chapter arrived on campus as early as 5 a.m. last Friday to display 2,977 flags in memory of the nearly 3,000 lives lost in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania over 20 years ago.

“Today we honor the sacrifices made on this day 20 years ago,” said Saugus High School YAF President Bryce Ferguson in an Instagram post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of the victims, survivors and heroes of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.”

The group of students, all who had not yet been born when the tragedy had occurred, decided to participate in the nationwide 9/11 Never Forget Project to commemorate the anniversary of those who lost their lives 20 years ago.

The 9/11 Never Forget Project remains the largest nationwide campus activism project of its kind where students across the country annually display exactly 2,977 American flags to remember those lost in the tragedy.

“It’s been truly amazing being able to put on such an amazing event,” Ferguson said. “I don’t think enough American teens really understand how much this affects all of us, especially today, and if we can help in a small way, that’s all I can ask for.”

If it weren’t for these displays, the anniversary is at risk of being forgotten, according to YAF officials.

“Our country was forever changed after the events of 9/11,” said YAF President Scott Walker. “Every student younger than 20 years old in this country was born after 9/11… We need to remind the next generation of what happened.”
