Saugus School Board Member Files To Run For City Council In 2022

Saugus Union School District Board member David Barlavi has filed paperwork to run for a seat on the City Council in the next municipal election.

The first candidate to do so, Barlavi filed to run in the 2022 municipal election for a seat on the Santa Clarita City Council on Thursday, June 17, according to documents filed with the City of Santa Clarita.

The city council can use some improvement and I think that I’m the person to bring that improvement,” Barlavi said Thursday. “I’ve noticed that the city council tends to make one to three terrible mistakes a year that not only hurt our reputation but also damage the city as a whole.”

Barlavi specifically pointed to instances in the past such as refusal to support Senate Bill 54 — also known as the so-called sanctuary city law.

“I have a devotion to Santa Clarita, I believe in the humanity of everyone and I want to make sure that people are living to their fullest potential,” Barlavi said. “I’m a big supporter of small and microbusinesses… that’s the real heartbeat of a city, the mom and pop shops.”

A tax, trust, and estate-planning attorney and member of the Saugus Union School District Board since 2018, Barlavi has lived and worked in Santa Clarita since 2004.

According to his professional website, Barlavi was the first male Women’s Studies graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Specialization in Women’s Studies in 1992.

Barlavi went on to work as a financial adviser from 1992 through 2008. He began practicing law in 2002 after passing the California Bar exam on the first attempt, having completed law school in 2001 at Golden Gate University School of Law, San Francisco, achieving a Juris Doctorate with emphases in Tax Law, Estate Planning, and Alternate Dispute Resolution (certified advanced mediator).

“I’m very good at problem-solving, and I could bring a lot of fresh ideas to a lot of old problems,” Barlavi said. “I would like to bring some fun and excitement to the city… There’s a lot I think that the city can do above and beyond what they’ve been doing.”

Fondly referred to as “Coach Dave” by the dozens of children he has coached in basketball, flag football, and soccer through City leagues and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), Barlavi and his wife have two children and a young grandson, all of whom attended schools in the Santa Clarita Valley.

In 2019, Barlavi was featured in news reports for receiving death threats after a group of protesters objected to him raising his fist – instead of an open hand – during the pledge of allegiance at a school board meeting.

More information can be found on the campaign website.
