Wilk, Valladares Share Thoughts On ‘Progressive’ California Governance During ‘State Of The State’

Senator Scott Wilk and Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, R-Santa Clarita, shared their opinions on a range of California policies during the fourth annual “State of the State” event put on by the Valley Industry Association (VIA).

Wilk and Valladares spoke to a gathering of business leaders and politicians throughout the Santa Clarita community Friday afternoon during the VIA event, which took place at the Hyatt Regency Valencia, to provide an overview of the status of California as a state.

Valladares began the event with a speech highlighting key issues affecting California. She addressed wildfires and public safety power shutoffs (PSPS), organized crime, domestic violence and Governor Gavin Newsom.

PSPS are power shut offs initiated by electricity providers during times where wildfire risk is high in areas located near flammable brush, including that which surrounds Santa Clarita.

“Not only have these events led to lost wages and learning time for families forced to work and study from home because of the pandemic, but they also provide very real threats to public safety,” Valladares said. “Some homes don’t have access to their water when they don’t have electricity. Some people store lifesaving medications in their refrigerator.”

Wilk, on the other hand, spent time discussing the navigation of policymaking in California’s capitol building.

“In Sacramento, common sense is not common practice,” Wilk said. “Everyone always goes ‘it’s the fifth largest economy in the world’ and that is true, but it has nothing to do with the policies coming out of Sacramento. It has to do with the fact that we have the smartest and hardest working people in the world living in California.”

The two representatives discussed tax hikes and how the wording for ballot measures can be misleading. California’s Attorney General is in charge of writing ballot measures, and Wilk argued this appointment results in partisan bias in ballot measures.

“Every year for eight years I’ve been co-authoring a bill to move it away from the Attorney General and allow the nonpartisan legislative analyst’s office to draft that, because then it would be neutral, and you wouldn’t have to be able to discern what in fact is true or not true,” Wilk said. “That is one of the most deceitful things that is perpetrated on the general public.”
