Two Southern California Providence Hospitals Earn National Safety Awards

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance in Southern California earned honors Tuesday with Healthgrades 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Awards.

The two Southern California Providence Hospitals were named among the top 10 and top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient safety respectively on Tuesday in the Healthgrades 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Awards.

“Ensuring patient safety is our sacred responsibility and we strive each day to improve upon protecting everyone in our care,” said Kevin Manemann, chief executive of Providence Southern California. “Congratulations to these two hospitals for raising the bar on safety and establishing practices that ensured safe care over the past year as the pandemic tested us all beyond what we could have imagined.”

The rankings reflect patient safety data from 2017 through 2019 evaluated by Healthgrades, a leading consumer health website that links patients to providers. According to Healthgrades, nearly half the 190,273 potentially preventable patient safety events among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals during that time frame would have been avoided if all hospitals met 13 Patient Safety Indicators evaluated by Healthgrades.

“Our physicians, nurses and all our staff have worked relentlessly to identify potential hazards and to speak up to ensure their concerns are addressed,” said Bernard Klein, chief executive of Providence Holy Cross. “As a healing ministry to the most vulnerable, safety for our patients is a critical component of the excellence and compassion we promise.”

From 2017 to 2019, four patient safety indicators accounted for 72 percent of all patient safety events — collapsed lung, hip fracture due to an in-hospital fall, pressure or bed sores and catheter-related bloodstream infections.

Healthgrades found patients in hospitals receiving their 2021 Safety Excellence award were around 50 percent less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure in or around the chest and about 60 percent less likely to experience an in-hospital fall resulting in hip fracture.

Healthgrades also found patients in hospitals receiving the award were around 67 percent less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores from the hospital, and around 65 percent less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections from the hospital.

“We congratulate the recipients of the Healthgrades 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Award for their ongoing commitment to upholding the highest quality standards for their patients and communities,” said Brad Bowman, chief medical officer of Healthgrades.
