Triumph Foundation Hosts Santa Clarita Valley Handcycling Event For Those In Wheelchairs

On Saturday, Santa Clarita-based non-profit the Triumph Foundation hosted a specially designed bicycling event for local residents and members of the disabled community.

A “hand-cycling” event was hosted by Santa Clarita non-profit the Triumph Foundation on Saturday, as part of the organization’s Adaptive Recreation programs it hosts for those affected by disabilities.

“It was great to resume our Adaptive Recreation programs,” said Triumph Foundation founder Andrew Skinner. “We had over 30 participants who had a blast and many of whom only became disabled this past year.”

The Triumph Foundation’s Adaptive Recreation events make activities such as riding bikes, target shooting and playing sports possible for people with mobility impairments, according to its website.

KHTS owner Carl Goldman, one such participant of Saturday’s activities, attended his first Triumph Foundation event since being confined to a wheelchair.

“It really gave me a sense of accomplishment to know I could master riding a bicycle,” Goldman said. “I experienced a real sense of freedom. Bonding and sharing challenges with other riders was extremely therapeutic. This is the first of many Triumph Foundation events I will attend.”

The Triumph Foundation’s website focuses on the personal benefits of Adaptive Recreation, many of which may not be known to those unaffected by disabilities.

“The benefits of Adaptive Recreation go beyond the physical, they transcend and contribute to the mental wellness and self-esteem for injured individuals,” the site’s description reads. “Among the ongoing challenges of spinal cord injury is a sense of being fragile and overprotected; sports allow a person to release pent-up emotions, feel a sense of camaraderie and fellowship among teammates and find a sense of purpose.”

The Triumph Foundation is a Santa Clarita-based non-profit organization whose mission is to help children, adults and veterans with Spinal Cord Injuries/Disorders to triumph over their disability and to inspire them to keep moving forward with their lives by pushing themselves to get better every day, according to Foundation officials.

“It was a life-changing experience for them and everyone that was involved,” Skinner said. “We’re also currently looking for sponsors, volunteers and people in the community who want to help what we do by getting involved.”

In addition to volunteers, Triumph is also seeking donations that are set to contribute to services and activities designed for those who face disabilities, noting that donations are tax-deductible, according to Foundation officials.
