Saugus Union School District Holds Groundbreaking For Cedarcreek, Skyblue Mesa Elementaries

The Saugus Union School District (SUSD) held a groundbreaking ceremony last week to mark the beginning of a $9 million construction project expanding Cedarcreek Elementary and a $7.5 million construction project expanding Skyblue Mesa Elementary in Santa Clarita.

Construction on the expansion of Cedarcreek Elementary in Santa Clarita began last Wednesday, commemorated by a groundbreaking ceremony.

“We here in the Saugus District are grateful for community support through Measure EE which
has made these important building projects possible,” said SUSD board President Laura Arrowsmith. “Before long, students and their teachers will have wonderful spaces, beyond their own classrooms, to support them as they dig into the potential and promise of the Next Generation Science Standards.”

The new construction is set to include a multi-purpose room, a science lab with a break-out room for small group instruction, a kitchen for school meals, “edible” schoolyard and an outdoor rotunda.

The “edible” school yard is set to be a garden where students learn how to care for plants including fruit trees, officials said.

The multi-purpose space is set to cover 3,240 square feet. The kitchen is projected to be 1,000 square feet, and the science lab and break-out room are slated to be 1,500 feet in size, according to District officials.

The schoolyard and rotunda are planned to cover 30,000 square feet, with the $9 million project being funded through Measure EE.

Construction on Skyblue Mesa Elementary began last Thursday, the same day the groundbreaking ceremony was held.

“As we close the chapter on a tumultuous school year, this groundbreaking ceremony for our new library and classrooms signifies hope and new beginnings,” said Skyblue Mesa Principal Kimberly Humphries. “We are excited about the new building and the upcoming school year.”

Skyblue Mesa’s construction project aims to provide them with a new library, science lab and classroom building.

The building is set to hold six classrooms, each measuring 1,000 square feet.

A 1,470 square foot library is also set to be built, alongside a 1,500 square foot science lab and break-out room.

The $7.5 million project is funded through a combination of Measure EE and CFD funds.

“The work being done to our school facilities through Measure EE is spectacular,” said SUSD Superintendent Coleen Hawkins. “We are so fortunate to have the support of the entire community to ensure our students have quality school facilities for now and into the future.”
