Santa Clarita Nonprofit Fostering Youth Independence Celebrates Graduation Of Foster Youths

Santa Clarita nonprofit Fostering Youth Independence (FYI) and the Rotary Club of Santa Clarita held a celebratory event this month for their graduating foster youth.

The celebration was held on June 24 honoring the FYI graduates and the volunteers and included handing out scholarships, according to officials.
As a surprise, Glenn Terry, president of the Rotary Clubs, gave five of FYI’s youth $500 scholarship checks to help them finish their bachelor’s degrees and fill in any gaps in their financial aid.

Only 55 percent of foster youth graduate from high school and with that, only 4 percent go on to get their bachelor’s degree.

One of FYI’s goals since the organization was founded four years ago is to help foster youth in their transition ages (16-25 years old). Giving them the resources they need in order to become adults that are successful and independent, according to their website.

“For a youth with no parental support, the value of a dedicated, caring adult cannot be overstated,” Carolyn Olsen, executive director and co-founder of FYI. “Allies are truly changing lives by offering the support and encouragement foster youth are lacking.”

With half of the foster youth becoming homeless or incarcerated within two years of aging out of the L.A. County foster system, FYI claims that the celebration of these successes is a priority.
