Santa Clarita Congressman Mike Garcia Hosts Blood Drive For Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital

With blood banks seeing a drop off in blood storage due to the coronavirus pandemic, Santa Clarita Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, and his campaign hosted a blood drive on Saturday to support the Houchin Community Blood Bank in Santa Clarita.

In partnership with the Garcia campaign’s Saturday of Service, Garcia hosted a blood drive drive at the Garcia Headquarters in Santa Clarita on Saturday.

Garcia’s presence at the blood drive stems from a program called “Saturday of Service,” where Garcia and his team of roughly 400 volunteers do something different each month to give back to the community, officials with the Garcia campaign said.

“A lot of these charities are having a hard time in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, especially the hospitals with their blood banks seeing a dramatic dropoff on their blood storage,” Garcia said. “This is a continuation of our campaign’s Saturday of Service. Last month, we worked with a food pantry and this week we’re here doing a blood drive for donations to local hospitals.”

“What we’ve done today is coordinated with the Blood Bank for people to go ahead and give back to the community as orchestrated through Congressman Mike Garcia,” Mike Terry, a volunteer at the drive said.

The drive was directed through the Houchin Community Blood Bank, a local community blood bank, that donates blood to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and City of Hope, according to Houchin officials.

“The Mike Garcia campaign was looking to do some community work and decided to get creative because of everything (due to the coronavirus pandemic),” Account Manager Synthia Rocha of the Houchin Community Blood Bank said. “They reached out to me a couple months ago to do a blood drive to give back to the hospitals that have been and are still in very much need of blood supply.”

“We would love to do more in the area,” Rocha said. “Call me if you’re interested in having a drive and we’ll show up with our bus and start saving lives.”
