Santa Clarita Coalition Asks For Community Support For Family Of Murder Victim Michelle Dorsey

The Santa Clarita Coalition is asking for a final push of donations to help the family of Michelle Dorsey, who was murdered last month by her estranged husband, get a new vehicle to help her family adjust to their new lives without her.

The family of Santa Clarita murder victim Michelle Dorsey is mere days away from obtaining a new vehicle to help her extended family care for her three children.

With the help of Santa Clarita Coalition and Antelope Valley Chevrolet, Jessica Jordan, Dorsey’s sister, hopes soon to be able to bring home a new Chevy Suburban to help in the care and transportation of her children.

“It is more than our pleasure to participate in helping Ms. Jordan with the proper transportation she needs,” said Justin Gonzales, Dealer Principal for Antelope Valley Chevrolet. “ Ms. Jordan is a hero in our eyes for taking care of these kids from this tragedy.”

However, obtaining a new vehicle won’t be possible unless the Santa Clarita Valley unites in a continued show of support and generosity.

Early on the morning of April 15, 2021, Dorsey was murdered by her estranged husband in her own home.

42-year-old James Matthew Dorsey drove from Washington State the day before the murder with the intention of kidnapping Michelle, according to her family. When he was unable to subdue her, he stabbed her and fled the scene.

Michelle managed to identify her attacker to law enforcement before she succumbed to her injuries.

“She fought him, and she fought with every ounce she had to save her boys, and on her 9-1-1 call she said exactly who did it and she said his name clear as day,” said Cheryl Smith, Michelle’s mother.

Her estranged husband would be arrested 17 hours later after a standoff with law enforcement.

For her surviving family, learning to build a new normal for Dorsey’s three sons has been a process, especially while tackling the emotional distress that has accompanied her death and the subsequent murder case in court.

“Grief is hard. One day you’re at the top of the mountain and you don’t feel like you’re going to make it, and the next day you hit a different level,” Smith said. “If you feel like you’re okay that day you feel like something is wrong with you, that it’s not okay, that no matter what we do it hurts.”

On Monday, May 17, 2021, Matt Dorsey pled “no-contest” to all charges laid against him by the court, including first-degree murder, attempted kidnapping, home invasion, evading law enforcement and assault on a peace officer.

“Walking into the courtroom was probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” Jordan said. “When they brought him in, just seeing him just tore my heart out… just hearing his voice is so upsetting. Just to know that he murdered my sister and he took her away from all of us.”

Dorsey’s family has previously expressed their dissatisfaction with the charges laid against her estranged husband under Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, who has elected to avoid adding sentencing enhancements, which reduces the amount of time to which defendants can be sentenced.

“I feel like the charges against him are not enough, not near enough for what he did,” Jordan said. “I feel like they couldn’t add on any of the extra charges because of our DA that’s in office and I don’t feel that’s right.”

Dorsey’s three children, Carson, Logan and Cameron are now in the care of their grandmother, who is working alongside their aunts and uncles to ensure that the boys have a loving home and support system while they attempt to recover from tragedy.

“I just want people to know that Michelle was a strong woman, that when they split up she was determined that she was going to build a life for her and the boys, and be together and be happy…she loved those boys with all of her heart,” her mother said. “And to know that she died trying to protect them is the type of mom that she was… I just hope I can fill her shoes.”
