Santa Clarita City Council To Discuss Bail, Sand Canyon Resort In Tuesday Meeting

The Santa Clarita City Council is set to take action on the waiving of monetary bail and the construction of the Sand Canyon Resort in a Tuesday meeting.

The city council is scheduled to touch on these topics, along with redistricting, an inclusive play area and other subjects during their meeting on July 13.

On Tuesday, the city council is slated to address Senate Bill 262 from the California State Senate, which would waive monetary bail for all misdemeanors and some felonies.

The bill would set bail at $0 for qualifying offenses, meaning those accused of a criminal offense with $0 bail would be booked by authorities, given a court date then released and asked to arrive at court to be tried.

The City Council Legislative Committee has recommended that the council oppose the bill and send out position statements to various legislators and legislative committees voicing their rejection.

Additionally, the Sand Canyon Resort Project, which has been denied by the City of Santa Clarita Planning Commission, is requesting an appeal from the city council.

The recommended action from city staff is for the city council to deny the appeal, preventing the project from being reconsidered by the planning commission.

Updated census data has led to a need to redraw districts for Congress, the state senate, the state assembly, the State Board of Equalization, and Los Angeles County Supervisorial Districts.

The recommended action for the city council is to recommend that the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley be placed into one district for each of the above categories, instead of being split into multiple districts.

Currently, Santa Clarita is represented by two state senators, Henry Stern, D-Canoga Park, and Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, with Stern representing southwestern parts of Newhall, Stevenson Ranch and Valencia.

A building contract for a play area inclusive for people of all ages and abilities at West Creek Park is scheduled to be considered at the Tuesday meeting as well. It would be the second such inclusive play structure built at a Santa Clarita City park.

The recommended action for the city council is to award a design-build contract with Landscape Structures, Inc. for a total contract amount of $1 million to construct the play area.
