L.A. County Issues Extended Heat Alert In Santa Clarita

The Los Angeles County Health Officer has extended a Heat Alert to the Antelope and Santa Clarita Valleys through next week as high temperatures are in the forecast.

The Heat Alert relates to the Antelope Valley through Wednesday, July 14 and in the Santa Clarita Valley through Tuesday, July 13.

“While it is very important that everyone take special care of themselves, it is equally important that we reach out and check on others, in particular those who are especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of high temperatures, including children, the elderly, and their pets,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer.

On Tuesday the forecast is expected to be in the lower to mid-90s with south winds up to 15-25 miles per hour in Santa Clarita, according to the National Weather Service.

Public Health also advises that everyone take precautions in hot weather to avoid heat-related illness, such as drinking water and wearing sunscreen and lightweight, light-colored clothes. Masks are also not recommended for strenuous workouts for athletic purposes.

Leaving pets or children in cars is strongly discouraged and 9-1-1 should be called if a child or pet is locked in a vehicle.

Children, the elderly and pregnant women are most susceptible to heat-related sickness so it is important to recognize the signs of illness. High body temperature, vomiting and pale and clammy skin are common symptoms.
