Santa Clarita Attempted Murder Suspect Pleads Not Guilty After Stabbing Brother, Sister-In-Law

A Santa Clarita attempted murder suspect returned to court Thursday and pled not guilty after an attack last November which left his sister-in-law partially paralyzed.

On Thursday, Guadalupe Albarran, 27, pled not guilty to attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and violating a restraining order, said Ricardo Santiago, spokesperson for the  Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, 2020, deputies responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon involving a knife on the 24100 block of Arch Street in Newhall, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at the time of the incident.

“During (the) investigation, deputies learned the suspect stabbed his brother’s wife with a kitchen knife multiple times in the upper torso,” Arriaga said at the time. “The suspect then approached his brother and stabbed him with the same kitchen knife multiple times in the upper torso.”

Upon arrival on the day of the attack, deputies detained Albarran in front of the home without incident, according to Arriaga.

As a result of the attack, Erika “Bird” Martinez, host of the YouTube cooking channel, “Cooking with Bird Martinez” and mother of three, was stabbed multiple times in the neck and back.

As a result of wounds from the attack, doctors feared she would become a quadriplegic, according to family officials.

However, in February, Martinez surpassed doctors’ expectations by taking her first steps since the incident, according to her family.

In addition to walking, she was able to get off a feeding tube and be able to feed herself.

“Erika has gained some control of her left arm and is using it to feed herself,” reads a Martinez Family GoFundMe update posted on Feb. 26. “This is something quadriplegics can’t typically do.”

Albarran is expected to return to court on June 22 for a preliminary setting.
