Red Cross Advises On Ways To Stay Safe This Summer

The Red Cross of the Los Angeles Region is aiming to advise the public on how to stay safe this summer, offering tips and resources on water and grilling safety.

The summer season is often accompanied by water sports and activities, requiring participants to be safe and aware of risks and being “water smart.” The Red Cross is offering a variety of water safety courses and resources for families online as well.

Some tips regarding water safety that are recommended by the Red Cross include preventing unsupervised access to water, staying within arm’s reach of young children in the water, wearing a life jacket when on a boat and swimming with a buddy.

The Red Cross also offers a swim app that can be downloaded and offers a free Water Safety for Parents and Caregivers course.

Among water-based activities, another staple summer pastime includes barbecues and grilling. Grilling sparks more than 10,000 home fires on average each year. In order to avoid these instances, the Red Cross advises that people always supervise a barbecue grill and don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

In addition, never grill indoors, make sure everyone including pets stay away from the grill and to use long-handled tools made for grilling.

If an accident were to occur, the Red Cross has several resources to help people learn how to treat bee stings, burns and heat emergencies online and on their free app. Information on blood donations is also listed in these sources.
