The Government has proposed its plans to welcome back supporters with a return to full capacity in stadiums across England starting from July 19, 2021 after recently easing the remaining restrictions on social distancing. They will announce the final decision on whether to lift the remaining restrictions nationwide from July 19, 2021 next Monday.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson looks to move away from legal restrictions and allow people to make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus. Step four will remove all legal limits on the numbers able to meet indoors and outdoors and will see all businesses reopen including nightclubs, concerts, theatre, and sports events.
Pilot test events proved successful
There was a gradual return of supporters to stadiums in the latter stages of the 2020-21 season in which Premier League clubs welcomed back up to 10,000 fans and a quarter of their full capacity for their final league fixture in May. The government held several successful pilot test events to assess the safety of supporters returning in sizable crowds with events such as the FA Cup semi-final, the FA Cup final and the Carabao Cup final having reduced attendances.
Just 21,000 attended the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester on 15th May with only 2,800 for the semi-final between Leicester and Southampton and 7,800 for the Carabao Cup final between Manchester City and Tottenham. The return of full capacity crowds to stadiums was given a further boost after the government reported only eight COVID-19 cases were found among 30,000 fans who attended the test pilot events earlier in April and May.
