Outside The Binary: An Intro To Non-Binary People In The Santa Clarita Community

One of the most commonly misunderstood and disregarded characters of the LGBTQ+ community, is the presence of individuals who do not identify as strictly male or female.

A defining factor of identifying as non-binary is the belief that gender is a spectrum, rather than the traditional belief that gender is strictly male or female, people can feel and identify as in-between, a mix, neither, or both male and female.

Not to be confused with genderfluid, non-binary views gender as a spectrum, whereas those who identify as genderfluid may identify as male or female at different times depending on how they feel fits them best at the time.

Most often people who identify as non-binary wish to not be trapped into specific gender expectations as they feel they are not specifically masculine or feminine, but would rather live without the bounds of either stereotype.

“I don’t want to have that gender expectancy hanging over my head that ‘I should be this way, I should be that way,’ instead I want to be completely out of that spectrum,” said Jae Enecial in an interview with the KHTS media team.

An important piece of identifying as nonbinary is the choice of pronouns other than the cisgender pronouns used in historical society. Many nonbinary people will choose the pronouns they/them, which despite popular belief is not grammatically incorrect.

“Often people will use multiple [pronouns]. Sometimes they will use other kinds of neopronouns,” said Joce Fannon.

Other options exist for nonbinary pronouns, such as the neopronouns Fannon mentioned. These include xe/xem/xyr, ze/hir/hirs, and ey/em/eir.

A common request from nonbinary people is support in their choice of pronouns. Often they are misgendered, which is someone assuming they are a different gender than they identify as, and the people closest to them reinforcing their pronouns and correcting people when misgendering happens is one way to ensure your nonbinary loved ones feel supported.
