Los Angeles County Sheriff Holds Active Shooter Training At Castaic Lake

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) conducted active shooter training along with the LASD Tactics and Survival unit and the Los Angeles County Fire Department at Castaic Lake on Tuesday.

LASD held the active shooter training on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Castaic Lake Recreation Area, which was closed to the public during training.

“We are basically doing everything we can as a sheriff’s department to prepare for real active shooter events,” said Deputy Brittany Fraser with the LASD. “We just want to be prepared for that to save as many lives as possible.”

About 100 sheriff’s department personnel from LASD stations across the county were involved in the training.

“We have personnel from Lancaster’s sheriff’s station, Santa Clarita’s sheriff’s station and different units from within the parks bureau,” said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station.

During active shooter training, a simulation is typically conducted with volunteers acting as victims and paintball rounds used in place of bullets.

Sheriff’s deputies are required to counteract the threat, then lead emergency responders into the area to treat the wounded, according to officials.

The training is meant to provide deputies and emergency personnel with the ability to react quickly during a shooting.

“It’s always important to prepare,” Arriaga said. “These skills can be perishable so it’s important that we continue to update our knowledge.”

The Castaic Lake location was chosen by the LASD because it provided them with a different setting to train in.

“We try to change it up because no active shooter scenario is ever the same,” Arriaga said. “You never know where these things are going to happen, so we want to make sure that we’ve gone through every type of scenario possible so we’re prepared.”

Although different parts of the LASD train frequently, training involving emergency responders working alongside such a large number of deputies happens less often, according to Fraser.

“These training exercises are a lot of work and there are a lot of moving parts,” Fraser said. “I really learned that many hands make light work.”
