Henry Mayo Reports Zero COVID-19 Hospitalizations, Holds New Car Raffle

On Wednesday, the Santa Clarita Valley’s Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital held a fundraising raffle drawing to win a new car on the same day that the hospital announced zero COVID-19 hospitalizations for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

A raffle to win a new Toyota was held on Wednesday, with the proceeds of raffle tickets going to the hospital, with the event marking a turning point for the hospital as it announced the news of its hospitalization rate before the winner was announced.

“We have had a COVID patient in this hospital under our care since the beginning of the pandemic, essentially,” said Medical Director of Emergency Care Dr. Bud Lawrence. “And this is the very first day that we can say that there are no patients that require our services, which is such a huge day for our community.”

The announcement of no pandemic-related hospitalizations comes four months after Henry Mayo announced a rapidly-created, brand new vaccination clinic on its grounds.

“Each person that’s vaccinated breaks up that chain of transmission through the community,” Lawrence said. “In all those tests that we’ve been doing, and those are on slightly higher-risk people in the ER we’ve been coming back with 0 percent per day or 1 percent per day.”

On Tuesday, California announced that L.A. County’s adjusted case rate had improved dramatically and dropped from 1.2 new cases per 100,000 people to 0.9 new cases per 100,000, according to officials.

“I think that we have to be cautiously optimistic that we are absolutely heading in the right direction, and zero patients in the hospital is an amazing sign of that,” Lawrence said. “However, we have to be vigilant. We still have to, as a community, be proactive and decrease the transmission of the virus.”

Attendees of the raffle had an edge of excitement as the news of zero hospitalizations was declared right before the winner of the new car was announced.

With the purchase of a ticket, participants entered their names for a chance to win a brand new 2021 Toyota Hybrid LE. The proceeds from sales are said to go to the hospital’s Emergency Services wing.

“There are a lot of curveballs that can happen, but this today in this moment is a very good sign that we are at least heading in the right direction,” Lawrence said. “I would never say it’s over, and I still think we have a lot of things to have concern about but we are 100 percent heading in the right direction.”

The vaccine clinic is located in the Henry Mayo Center at 23803 McBean Parkway and is open between 8:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.
