Fire Officials Use Explosive Display To Warn Against The Danger Of Fireworks In Santa Clarita

On Wednesday, officials from the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), the Sheriff’s Department and the City of Santa Clarita held a demonstration to warn residents against using any fireworks this Independence Day.

Using a pyrotechnic display, along with several speeches by community leaders, officials from the Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department and City Council warned Santa Clarita against using fireworks on the 4th of July.

“Please remember that all fireworks are illegal in the city of Santa Clarita, including those that are labeled ‘safe and sane,’” said Santa Clarita Mayor Bill Miranda. “Today we will provide reminders of the dangers of illegal firework use, followed by a pyrotechnic demonstration from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, to encourage everyone to leave fireworks displays to the professionals.”

The press conference, held at Fire Station 126 in Valencia, featured a speech from LACoFD Fire Chief Daryl Osby on the dangers previous illegal fireworks posed.

“I encourage all people just to simply visit a professional fireworks show,” Chief Osby said. “Last year we responded to over 39 fires related to fireworks, and that’s a stark contrast from the previous year when there were only three.”

The final speaker, Medical Director Dr. Matt Young of the Grossman Burn Center of West Hills Hospital, spoke on the dangers of firework injuries and fatalities.

“You’ll see some examples of explosions here, where it’s different from when you get a burn on your hand,” Dr. Young said. “If you get a burn on your hand, we can take care of it, usually it can be fixed. If your hand explodes, it’s gone.”

After the speakers, officials used firework technology to light a shirt on fire, followed by the explosion of a phone book and two watermelons through the same pyrotechnics.

The display was part of an overall message by local officials to leave fireworks and sparklers to professionals, so as to avoid injuries, deaths or the start of brush fires.

To warn the city about any illegal fireworks displays, Santa Clarita residents are reportedly instructed to visit here.

To report an illegal fireworks display to law enforcement, call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121.

If any life-threatening events occur, Santa Clarita residents are asked to call 9-1-1.
