The California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced that a sobriety checkpoint is scheduled to be conducted at an unknown location in Santa Clarita this weekend.
From approximately 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, July 9 through Saturday, July 10 The CHP is said to be conducting a checkpoint to inspect any drivers for lack of sobriety.
Additionally, the location of the DUI checkpoint is expected to be announced to the public just prior to the operation according to officials.
Motorists approaching the checkpoint are said to be notified by signs advising them of a sobriety checkpoint ahead.
“Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked. If traffic volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard, such as every 5th or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity,” CHP officials said.
Officials state that once the motorists are diverted into the lane, they are set to be momentarily detained as one of the officers explains the purpose of the checkpoint.
Highway Patrol officials claim that they use these DUI Checkpoints to deter motorists from driving under the influence. Additionally, they have found that the psychological impact these checkpoints have on the motorist community is “invaluable”.
“Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the CHP will apprehend DUI drivers who fail to heed our warnings,” CHP officials said.
