Barger Sends Letter Requesting State Align With CDC Mask Guidance

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom Friday asking that the State of California immediately align with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the White House on guidance regarding relaxed masking requirements for individuals who are fully vaccinated, including in Santa Clarita.

Barger noted that L.A. County cannot change local mask mandates until the state loosens regulations to match new CDC guidance which would allow fully vaccinated Americans to go without masks in most situations.

California is reporting the lowest COVID-19 positivity rate in the nation at 1.1 percent test positivity as of Tuesday, according to the California state COVID-19 dashboard website.

“Los Angeles County has made tremendous progress vaccinating residents, including those in our hard-hit communities,” Barger said. “Furthermore, our positivity rate is less than 1 percent and our case rate remains low. While we still want to keep our communities safe, I am encouraged by the new guidance from the CDC and believe that the State and Los Angeles County should immediately align with the new Federal recommendations.”

The CDC announced Thursday that it is updating COVID-19 guidance to say that fully vaccinated people, including those in Santa Clarita, are not required to wear masks or social distance except for in certain situations.

The CDC still urges fully vaccinated people to wear well-fitted masks when it is required by federal, state or local laws, as well as on private property by businesses, according to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

As of Friday, a state mask mandate was still in place in California.

“I appreciate your concern for the health of our residents as we continue to work toward recovery,” reads the letter. “ As we make progress to enable all Californians to get vaccinated, we can allow community members and businesses to safely and strategically gather with fewer restrictions.”
