5 Freeway Crash Temporarily Blocks Southbound Lanes After Santa Clarita Vehicle Fire

A crash on the southbound I-5 Freeway temporarily blocked southbound lanes after a vehicle caught fire in Santa Clarita, officials said.

Around 12 p.m. Sunday, emergency responders received reports of a traffic collision on the southbound 5 Freeway between Calgrove Blvd and Lyons Avenue in Santa Clarita, according to Ed Pickett, a dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We received reports of a solo-vehicle with fire,” said Pickett. “We transported one to the trauma center.”

The solo-vehicle traffic collision occurred after a sedan lost a tire and crashed into the right shoulder of the 5 Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs.

The vehicle caught on fire after all passengers exited the vehicle, according to Fire officials.

Lanes were temporarily blocked on the southbound 5 Freeway for an unknown duration as of 12 p.m. Sunday due to the crash, according to CHP incident logs. Most lanes had been reopened to traffic by 12:30 p.m., according to officials on scene.

Information on the extent of the injuries sustained was not available as of 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
