Santa Clarita Veterans Services Collaborative Reopens Doors After Nearly A Year

The Santa Clarita Veterans Services Collaborative (SCVSC) has finally reopened after they were forced to close their doors nearly a year ago due to COVID-19 precautions.

As certain Los Angeles County restrictions have been lifted, the SCVSC has reopened on April 1, having been closed since March of last year. Many new volunteers have been trained and their weekly food bank has expanded to accommodate the influx of veterans eager for the reopening, officials said.

“Our new group of volunteers are so excited to interact with the veterans and hear their stories. There is a high anticipation to serve not only the veterans but their families as well,” said Jeffrey Stabile, executive director at SCVSC.

Founded by Elliot and Judy Wolfe in 2016, the SCVSC has served the veteran community by providing benefit assistance via a network of veteran service officers (VSO) and post service officers, as well as establishing a local food bank. Their referral services cover education, counseling, home care, mental care, financial and legal services, employment, training, and more, officials said.

The SCVSC building has a redesigned interior to comply with safety requirements from the state, county and city.

To allow for more efficiency, SCVSC has two volunteers working in the morning and two in the afternoon, compared to the previous schedule which had just one volunteer working the entire day, according to Stabile.

Their new food bank system allows for six veterans at a time to wait in the lobby and fill out a form while volunteers go through and pick out the desired baked, canned and packaged goods for them.

Stabile noted that SCVSC plans to institute a number of new ideas to allow a smoother transition into the reopening, including the construction of two new offices to allow private arrangements between VSO’s and veterans, updating their office computer and implementing a potential drive-through food bank.

General monthly SCVSC meetings, rather than over Zoom, are set to return to in-person on the third Friday of each month beginning at 1 p.m. and lasting one hour.
