Tyler Glasnow (Hart ‘11) put on a pitching masterclass, helping the Tampa Bay Rays win, 1-0, over the Miami Marlins on Opening Day.
Glasnow, a 27 year old right handed pitcher, was drafted straight out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft. He was traded to the Rays in 2018 and quickly found a home, establishing himself as one of the premiere young pitchers in baseball.
Through the first couple months of the 2019 season, Glasnow was right in the hunt for the American League Cy Young Award, but his season was cut short due to injury. Last season, Glasnow was part of a Rays pitching staff that helped the team reach the World Series for just the second time in team history. This offseason, ace Blake Snell was traded to the San Diego Padres, thrusting Glasnow into the role.
On Thursday, Glasnow proved that he was fit to be the ace of the Rays pitching staff in his first Opening Day start. Glasnow pitched six innings, giving up just one hit and striking out six. The only base runner he allowed came on a single by Jesus Aguilar in the first inning. Glasnow promptly retired the next 16 batters he faced before being pulled after the sixth inning. He displayed his new slider, throwing it on 26 out of his 76 pitches. Glasnow had been working on the slider to give him another weapon to go along with his curveball and fastball which reached 100 mph on Thursday.

The last inning Glasnow pitched was his most impressive. The Rays ace threw nine pitches in the inning, all of which were strikes. He retired both Miguel Rojas and Magneuris Sierra via strikeout before getting Corey Dickerson to ground out to second.
Glasnow did not get run support from his team, as his pitching counterpart Sandy Alcantara also pitched six scoreless innings for the Marlins. The lone run of the game came in the eighth inning when Rays’ outfielder Austin Meadows hit a two out homerun to right-center field.
Glasnow’s next projected start is Wednesday, April 7 against the Boston Red Sox.
Glasnow’s Hart teammate, Trevor Bauer, will make his highly anticipated debut with the Dodgers tonight at 5:40 PM against the Colorado Rockies.
