Santa Clarita Brush Fire Breaks Out Near Pitchess Detention Center


A Santa Clarita brush fire broke out near Pitchess Detention Center Wednesday, prompting a response from firefighters.

UPDATE (6:36 p.m.) Mandatory Evacuation Orders now in place due to the North Fire, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials. Mandatory evacuation zones include: North and west of West Hills Drive, north of Iron Village Drive, north and west of Tesoro Del Valle, north of Copper Hill Drive.

Rye Canyon Loop remains under voluntary evacuation status, Sheriff’s officials said.


UPDATE (6:10 p.m.)
Additional evacuation warnings have been issued for several other streets in Valencia due to the North Fire, according to Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station officials. New warnings have been issued for: Bellows Court, Via Patina and Platinum Court. Original evacuation warnings at Rye Canyon Loop, Sterling Lane, and Iron Village Drive remain in place.

UPDATE (6:00 p.m.) The North Fire is currently at 460 acres in size with 0% containment, according to City of Santa Clarita officials.

Road closures are in place for West Hills Drive. from Iron Village Drive to northern Copper Hill Drive entrance in Valencia, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s officials. Evacuation warnings remain in place.

UPDATE (4:39 p.m.) Voluntary evacuation warnings are in place for the areas of Rye Canyon Loop, Sterling Lane, and Iron Village Drive in Valencia, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s spokesperson Natalie Arriaga.

UPDATE (4:30 p.m.) The North Fire is now at least 150 acres with no structures threatened, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

The North Fire is now at least 90 acres in size with no structures threatened, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

UPDATE: (3:2o p.m.): The North Fire is now 50 acres in size, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

UPDATE (3:00 p.m.) The North Fire is now 30 acres in size with no threats to homes and no injuries reported, according to Henry Narvaez, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Over 130 personnel are on scene for fire attack and fixed-wing aircraft have been requested.

UPDATE (2:40 p.m.): The North Fire has increased to five acres in size.

Original Story: The brush fire, dubbed the North Fire, was first reported to firefighters around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday on the 29000 block of The Old Road at Pitchess Detention Center, said Henry Narvaez, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

As of 1:45 p.m., the fire is currently at one acre and has burned to a dozer line in the hills we made recently, Narvaez said.

“A dozer line is a break in the fuel that will give us an opportunity to stop the forward progress of the fire,” Narvaez said.

The fire is currently burning in medium to light fuels with no structures threatened, according to Fire officials.
