Purchase Of 132 Acres In Bee Canyon Scheduled To Be Discussed In Santa Clarita City Council Meeting

In an upcoming regular City Council meeting Tuesday, the acquisition of the 132 acre “Bee Canyon” in the Soledad Canyon area is set to be discussed for approval.

The 132 acre property, known as “Bee Canyon,” is planned to allow for connection to the Eastern Greenbelt Open Spaces owned by the City of Santa Clarita. If approved on Tuesday’s City Council meeting on April 27. The property is set to serve as the main trailhead for this connection.

The City of Santa Clarita and partner conservation agencies own over 2,300 acres in the Agua Dulce Parkland/ Eastern Greenbelt region, making the purchase of Bee Canyon a natural connection to the neighboring properties.

Bee Canyon is located in the Conservation Area Protection Plan, which has recognized the wildlife corridor as a critical missing linkage in the Angeles National Forest, according to officials.

The appraisal for the property was completed in March 2019 for a value of $975,000. And an additional 77 acres are scheduled to be set aside as open space in favor of the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA).

An annual, ongoing grant of $2,000 is necessary for payment of property taxes since the property is outside of the City of Santa Clarita, according to officials.

The MRCA requires the completion of certain mitigation measures, as set forth in one or more agreements with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and one or more public agencies.

This acquisition is in compliance with the mission of the Open Space Preservation District and reviewed to follow the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), which requires state and local government to inform decision makers on any potential environmental impacts a proposed project may have.

Any subsequent or proposed changes in the use or condition of the Bee Canyon property are set to be subject to CEQA guidelines.
