L.A. County Officials Say Covid Vaccines Are ‘Crucial’ To Ending Pandemic

In a statement Saturday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) reminded the public that receiving the COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to dramatically reduce your risk of getting infected with or dying from COVID-19.

On Saturday, the LADPH reminded Los Angeles County residents that all three COVID-19 vaccines are exceptionally powerful tools for preventing infection and serious illness. A recent confirmed study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that fewer than 0.007 percent of the nearly 90 million Americans with full protection against the virus have been infected with COVID-19.

“This virus has caused havoc and pain in our County for too long. However, we now have a way forward to end the pandemic,” said Barbara Ferrer, director of Public Health. “It is more important than ever for everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to look over the information about vaccine safety and make an appointment as soon as you can. When you do, you’ll be protecting yourselves and just as importantly, you’ll be keeping yourselves healthy so you can continue to support those you love.”

New evidence from researchers at the CDC this week show that the COVID-19 vaccination appears to be safe during pregnancy. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine has also endorsed vaccination in pregnancy, based on evidence it has been evaluating over many months, LADPH officials said.

This weekend, Public Health is offering vaccinations without appointments at all County-run vaccination sites while supply lasts. Anyone 16 and older living or working in Los Angeles County can now get vaccinated without booking an appointment (teens 16 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Registration for COVID-19 appointments will be completed on-site.

After a thorough safety review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the CDC, it was determined that the pause in the use of the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine can be lifted and that use of the vaccine should resume.

More than 6,642,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to people across Los Angeles County. Of these, over 4,254,000 were first doses and over 2,387,000 were second doses.

An additional 443 new COVID-19 cases and 16 deaths were reported by the LADPH across L.A. County on Saturday.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,231,163 positive cases of COVID-19 and 23,775 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the LADPH officials.

Testing results are available for over 6,414,000 people, with a cumulative 18 percent of people testing positive, according to officials.

As of Saturday, there were 453 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in L.A. County, 23 percent of which are in the Intensive Care Unit.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

Non-compliance and dangerous conditions at businesses and worksites can be reported to Public Health anonymously by phone at 888-700-9995.

On Saturday, 15 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 26,783 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley over the past year, according to the LADPH. These cases include:
