Los Angeles County Nearing COVID-19 Yellow Tier Qualifications For Re-Opening

District Supervisor Kathryn Barger (5th district) released a statement on Friday stating that Los Angeles County is nearing COVID-19 numbers low enough to qualify to re-open to the yellow tier, including the city of Santa Clarita.

The yellow tier is the least restrictive tier of state COVID-19 reopening guidelines, and officials expect the county, including the Santa Clarita Valley, to qualify for the yellow tier beginning next Tuesday, May 4.

This movement forward is set to allow for more businesses and activities to  open and encourage people to begin spending time with loved ones once again, officials said.

“As we continue to reopen, I urge residents 16 and older to get vaccinated, now available at sites countywide without an appointment necessary… I am encouraged by the progress we’ve made recently and look forward to taking more steps to restore our neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and recreation,” Barger said.

Unlike the moderate orange tier, which L.A. County is in now, the yellow tier will reportedly no longer limit restaurants to 200 people, but are still limited to 50 percent capacity. The limit can go up to as far as 75 percent if all guests can “show proof of full vaccination or a negative COVID test” said Barger.

In addition to restaurants, amusement parks and fairs can expand to 35 percent capacity versus the orange tier limit of 25 percent. Similar to restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, and card rooms may open to 50 percent capacity, and 75 percent if all guests can meet the same requirements of full vaccination or a negative test. Shopping malls are also predicted to be granted permission to open their common areas with modifications.
