L.A. County Reports Lowest Test Positivity Rate Since the Beginning of Pandemic

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) officials announced Saturday that this week marks L.A. County’s lowest test positivity rate since the start of the pandemic.

The test positivity rate is the percent of all COVID-19 tests performed that come back positive, and today’s rate is just 1.1% in L.A. County.  The test positivity rate peaked on December 30, during the height of the surge, at 20.9%, and has dropped 45 percent in the last month, officials said.

“April is a critical month in our COVID-19 recovery journey. Over the last few weeks, businesses and public spaces have reopened, and many more people have been out and around others,” said Barbara Ferrer, L.A. County Director of Public Health . “With increased contact among non-household members, there are many more opportunities for transmission of COVID-19, particularly if public health directives are not followed.”

LADPH has continued to track cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a serious inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19 that affects children under 21 years old.

As of Saturday, an additional 11 cases of MIS-C have been identified to Public Health including a total of 169 MIS-C cases within children in L.A. County and one child death. All 169 children with MIS-C in L.A. County were hospitalized and 39% of the children were treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), LADPH officials said.

MIS-C symptoms include fever that does not go away and inflamed body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. If a child has displayed MIS-C symptoms, LADPH is urging concerned residents to contact a primary care or an urgent care provider.

For community members that do not have a primary care provider, L.A. County is set to help those in need of a provider by dialing 2-1-1 on your cellular device.

More than 4,715,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to people across Los Angeles County. Of those vaccinated, 1,652,149 people received second doses and 136,232 people received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

An additional 813 COVID-19 cases and 37 deaths were reported across L.A. County Saturday, according to officials.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,225,256 positive cases of COVID-19 and 23,467 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the LADPH officials.

Testing results are available for over 6,192,000 people, with a cumulative 18 percent of people testing positive, according to officials.

As of Saturday, there were 508 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in L.A. County, 24 percent of which are in the ICU.

The Southern California Region has 32.1 percent staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of the state’s last update on Tuesday, April 6, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.
