Detectives Offer Tips On How To Avoid Santa Clarita Valley ATM Scams

Detectives with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station are offering tips to residents to avoid being the victim of an ATM scam.

Detectives have been receiving reports of ATM skimmers being discovered at different locations in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Facebook post.

“ATM skimmers are credit and debit card readers hidden within an ATM card reader,” Sheriff’s officials said.

Scammers typically compromise the machine, allowing them to have access and steal data, according to Sheriff’s officials.

With the rise in bank information being stolen, Sheriff’s deputies are offering tips on how to avoid becoming the next victim.

To avoid becoming a victim of fraud, avoid using an ATM if:

  1. There appears to be any form of tampering, such as graphics not aligned right
  2. The keypad appears too thick, off-centered or loose
  3. Lights on the keypad do not light up
  4. Multiple attempts are required in order for your card to work
  5. The seal has been broken

Deputies are encouraging Santa Clarita residents to use ATMs inside a location where it is harder for thieves to tamper with because of constant supervision, and always check your bank statements for suspicious activity, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Some banks allow for you to receive alerts when a certain cap amount is charged,” officials said. “Be aware. Be alert. Be safe.”
