Valencia Vikings Start Season Strong With Dominant 73-3 Win

In the second week of the long-awaited return to high school sports in the William S. Hart Union High School District, both Valencia and Golden Valley football teams saw impressive wins during Friday’s game.

During the second week of the 2021 football season on Friday, the Valencia Vikings dominated the Canyon Cowboys with their second win of the season at an astonishing 73-3.

The Golden Valley Grizzlies continued their momentum from last week’s tie-game with a win of 31-15 against the West Ranch Wildcats.

Valencia scored their first point early on in the first quarter with a 10 yard rushing touchdown by running back Christian Alcantar.

During the beginning of the second quarter at 14-0, the Cowboys took 11 plays to reach the 29-yard line and score for the first and last time of the game with a 46-yard field goal by senior kicker Jarret Reeser.

Highlights from the second quarter include Valencia quarterback Tyler Voss throwing a 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Zamondre Merriweather, followed by a 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by wide receiver Brandon Tompkins.

Canyon attempted to retaliate in the fourth quarter, but only possessed the ball on their own yard lines with minimal movement and progression up the field.

Vikings kicker Ty Morrison scored a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, advancing Valencia’s score to an astounding 73 for the remainder of the game.

Valencia has continued their success coming off of last Friday’s 63-20 win against West Ranch, while Canyon continues to fumble their way into the season with a 41-20 loss against Saugus last Friday.

The second game this weekend showed the Golden Valley Grizzlies face off against the West Ranch Wildcats, beating their rivals by double the points.

The Grizzlies began their second game of the season with five straight rushing attempts, followed by a 2-yard touchdown by senior Lucas McCoy with help from running back Jared Giles’s two 9-yard rushes and sizable yardage runs.

West Ranch wideout Owen Strunck snagged a 27-yard score from senior quarterback Walker Eget, but the Wildcats offense was not able to keep up after with three consecutive turnovers, an interception and multiple fumbles.

Golden Valley continued on in the fourth quarter, gaining one more score from wide receiver Carlos Meza for a 25-yard touchdown.

The Grizzlies gained their first win after last week’s 7-7 draw against the Indians, while the Wildcats currently remain at 0-2 for the season after their 63-20 loss against the Vikings.

The exciting return to high school football will continue next week as the scheduled games are set to include a faceoff between Valencia and Hart on Thursday, West Ranch versus Canyon on Saturday, and a matchup between Golden Valley and Saugus.
