5 Freeway Big Rig Fire Spreads To Brush North Of Castaic

A big rig fire on the I-5 Freeway spread to the surrounding brush Friday afternoon, prompting a response from firefighters.

UPDATE (1:30 p.m.): Forward progress has been stopped on the Five Fire near Castaic at approximately one acre in size, firefighters are expected to remain on scene to mop up any hotspots related to the incident, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Expect traffic delays.

UPDATE (1:10 p.m.):
A SigAlert has been issued for the No. 3 and 4 lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway for at least one hour due to the Five Fire north of Castaic, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Management Office.

Original Story: Around 12:40 p.m. Friday, first responders received reports of a vehicle fire on the northbound 5 Freeway north of Lake Hughes Road, said Leslie Lua, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We responded to reports of a big rig on fire,” Lua said.

Flames that were visible from under the hood of the truck sparked a one-acre brush fire, dubbed the Five Fire, according to Lua.

Traffic is expected to be impacted on the northbound 5 Freeway leaving Castaic, according to officials.
