Paralyzed Santa Clarita Resident Wins Car In Triumph Giveaway

On March 3, Santa Clarita Valley resident Rashida Brown, who had suffered from paralysis as a result of a gunshot wound, won a van in a Triumph Foundation giveaway.

Paralysis survivor Rashida Brown, who had been injured by a gunshot years ago, won the Triumph Foundation’s Adapted Van Giveaway.

“I was shot in 1992, when I was thirteen, by accident,” Brown recounted in a video interview on the Triumph Foundation’s YouTube account. “I went from playing basketball to being wheelchair-bound.”

As the years went on, Brown said that she learned to cope with the struggles of being bound to a wheelchair as she went through her life.

“It definitely was a struggle,” she said. “I had a really good support system though around me. My parents and friends and siblings. Without them, I don’t think I’d have been able to get this far.”

With four children and one grandchild, Brown had previously spoken about transportation issues with her and her family.

“I’m dealing with aches and pains and things of that nature,” she explained. “A van would be such a blessing to me and my family. Sometimes I just want to go without having to say ‘Hey, I want to go.’”

As the interview being held in her front yard continued, she was greeted by a van arriving behind her and a look of delight came across her face.

“I hope you guys really understand, I don’t win anything,” she happily told her interviewer, eagerly climbing into the van as she realized she had won. “I am not a lucky person.”

Brown’s two children came to join the interview, happily climbing into the van alongside their mother.

“Thank you Triumph Foundation, I love you guys,” Brown told her interviewers and the Foundation that awarded her the car. “Thank you so much!”

The Triumph Foundation’s goal is to provide resources and support systems to aid children, adults, and veterans with Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder (SCI) allowing them to triumph over their disabilities and help them to improve their circumstances.
