Five More Santa Clarita Natives Playing In Spring Training

Hart High School has four alumni currently playing for MLB teams at Spring Training, but there are five more Santa Clarita stars who are also competing.

Jared Oliva, Valencia (‘13), Keston Hiura, Valencia (‘14), Hunter Greene, Notre Dame (‘17), born in Santa Clarita, Scott Barlow, Golden Valley (‘11), and Tommy Milone, Saugus (‘05) are all in either Arizona or Florida for Spring Training this year.

Jared Oliva started his baseball career at Valencia High School before playing his college ball at University of Arizona. He was selected in the 7th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Oliva made his Big League debut last season where he appeared in six games, recording three hits and also stealing a base. His best game came on September 24 against the Chicago Cubs. Oliva had two hits to help the Pirates win 7-0. Currently Oliva is in Spring Training with the Pirates and has appeared in five games thus far. In this time he has two hits, including a home run, and two walks. He also has two RBIs and two runs scored.

Keston Hiura was teammates with Jared Oliva at Valencia High School. He wrapped up his high school career by being named Foothill League Player of the Year, as well as, Santa Clarita Valley Player of the Year. Hiura went on to play at UC Irvine for three years before being selected ninth overall in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He made his MLB debut on May 14th,  2019 where he went 2-for-3, with a walk. In his rookie season Hiura played in 84 games, tallying 95 hits, including 19 home runs, 23 doubles, and two triples. He also drove in 49 runs and scored 51 himself. Last season Hiura played in all but one game for the Brewers and was able to rack up 46 hits and 13 home runs in the shortened season. In Spring Training this year, Hiura has played in eight games, and has two hits including a home run. Expect to see Hiura in the Brewers starting lineup on Opening Day.

Hunter Greene was born in Santa Clarita, however played his high school ball at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks. Greene elected to forgo college and was drafted second overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2017 MLB Draft, becoming part of the three players from Santa Clarita to be drafted in 2017. Greene is known for his blazing fastball which he threw 103 mph during his only Spring Training outing this season. He made this appearance back on March 2nd, pitching one inning, striking out one, and giving up three runs. Expect Greene to make his MLB debut this season.

Scott Barlow like Hunter Greene made the decision to not play in college and go straight into the Minor Leagues. The Golden Valley High School star was drafted in the 6th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011. Barlow made his Major League debut on April 30, 2018 for the Kansas City Royals. In the 2018 season he pitched 15 innings over six games and had an ERA of 3.60. In the 2019 season he appeared in 61 games out of the bullpen and posted a 4.22 ERA and struck out 92 batters. He also recorded his first career save in 2019. Last season, Barlow pitched in more than half of the games for the Royals. He had a 4.20 ERA and 39 strikeouts. In Spring Training this year he has pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Barlow should be a staple in the Royals bullpen again this year.

Tommy Milone was named Foothill League Player of the Year in his final season at Saugus High School before enrolling at USC to further his baseball career. He was drafted in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. His MLB debut came on September 3, 2011 against the New York Mets. Milone gave four runs in 4.1 innings pitched. His best season came in 2015 for the Minnesota Twins. He posted a record of 9-5 over 23 starts and had a 3.92 ERA. After last season, Milone signed a Minor League contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. In Spring Training this year, Milone has pitched a scoreless 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Milone hopes to make the Blue Jays roster in the coming weeks.
