D.A., LAPD Open Investigations After Retired Officer Seen Using ‘Racial Slur’ In Valencia Video

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office (LADA) announced Tuesday that it would be opening an investigation to cases involving a retired Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detective seen using racial slurs in a social media video filmed in Valencia.

District Attorney George Gascón announced in a tweet Tuesday that the LADA would be reviewing 370 cases handled by the retired detective.

“The video in question is disturbing & involves a former homicide detective exhibiting racist tendencies,”  Gascón wrote Tuesday. “(The LADA’s Office) is taking immediate action & has identified several cases where this individual was a witness. We are in the process of notifying defense attorneys in such cases.

A video posted to social media on Monday shows the former homicide detective pulled over to the eastbound side of Valencia Boulevard between Cinema Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road after a traffic incident. The former detective is seen in a verbal altercation with a young Black motorist.

The retired detective can be heard telling the young man, “Oh, but you can say (n—-r) and I can’t?”

He goes on to say, “Go back into your little cage until the monkey controller gets here.”

The LAPD acknowledged Tuesday that the man in the video was a retired detective.

According to an official statement from the LAPD, the man seen in the video is not a current member of the department, but a former homicide detective who retired in May 2020.

“To ensure there is no current Department nexus to this incident, there has been an internal investigation started,” the statement reads. “What is seen in the video is not reflective of the thousands of hard-working and dedicated men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department.”

The LAPD has pledged full cooperation with the investigations, officials said.
