Dr. Abner Chou Named Interim TMUS President

Officials with The Master’s University & Seminary (TMUS) announced Friday that Dr. Abner Chou has been appointed to serve as interim president after Dr. Sam Horn resigned from the position a week prior.

On Friday, the TMUS Board of Directors announced the selection of Chou, who currently teaches at The Master’s University (TMU) as the John F. MacArthur Endowed Fellow, in a statement.

“(Chou) is a well-regarded theologian and author who has taught at TMU for 17 years,” the statement reads. “We are grateful for Dr. Chou’s longstanding commitment to the doctrinal heritage of TMUS, and we are confident that he will faithfully lead the institution during this interim period.”

The announcement comes exactly a week after Horn submitted his letter of resignation from the role of president, a position he held for less than a year.

“During Dr. Horn’s tenure, the Lord faithfully guided us through challenges, overwhelmed us with his generosity, and encouraged us with an enrollment that reflects years of careful investment and planning,” Friday’s statement reads.

During his brief tenure, Horn led TMUS through its re-opening process during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the school’s ultimately successful efforts to “reaffirm” their accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) after being placed on probation back in 2018.

“We are grateful for the way all these circumstances have stretched us, and we thank the Lord for the achievements of the past year,” Friday’s statement reads. “We are confident that TMUS is in a strong place as we look to the future.”

Chou is set to serve in the position of interim president while the TMUS board goes through the process of searching for and selecting a new president to fill the role longterm.

“The board asks our faculty, staff, students, and alumni to pray for Dr. Chou, especially as he leads the schools into an exciting new chapter,” Friday’s statement reads. “Our confidence is in the Lord. He has been faithful to TMUS since 1927, and we are confident his kind grace will continue to go before us.”

Chou is expected to address the student body on Monday morning during the university’s regular chapel service.
