Bridge To Home Homeless Shelter Approved By Santa Clarita Planning Commission

The City of Santa Clarita Planning Commission approved the proposed Bridge to Home permanent homeless shelter in Saugus during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

Approved by the Santa Clarita Planning Commission, the proposed Bridge to Home permanent homeless shelter is planned to be built on the northeast terminus of Drayton Street in Saugus.

“We are privileged in bringing this Bridge to Home vision to reality,” Planning Commission Chair Dan Masnada.

Bridge to Home’s proposal for permanent housing is described as a construction of an approximately 18,680 square-foot, 35-foot tall, two-story building located at 23000 block of Drayton Street in Santa Clarita.

The ground floor is designed to include a front lobby, intake areas, offices, restrooms, kitchen, dining area and resident lounge. The second floor would contain three 20-bed dormitories (two dormitories for men, one for women), restrooms, showers and laundry facilities.

Additional eight family units would be provided within the building to accommodate four people per unit.

Proposed amenities include parking facilities, fire department access, ADA path of travel, resident recreation areas, and secure gating of the property.

Bridge to Home temporarily moved its 60-bed shelter operations to the Newhall Community Center in March of 2020 to allow for more social distancing between clients.

“This is a long time coming and I congratulate the Bridge to Home folks for the service that they’ve provided,” said commissioner Tim Burkhart, “and with that small accolade I will move that we approve…”

The Bridge to Home plans were approved unanimously by the Santa Clarita planning Commission, Tuesday night.

All activities associated with the homeless shelter are expected to take place entirely within the new building, unless otherwise approved within the permit, according to city documents.
