SCV Water Announces Extension To Public Comment Period On Community Water

The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency (SCV Water) has extended the public comment period on Santa Clarita’s local water supply, announcing a second virtual public meeting to learn more about the Saugus Formation Aquifer Non-Time Critical Removal Action.

SCV Water has extended its public comment period for the Saugus Aquifer Non-Time Critical Removal Action to March 19. During this time, the agency is set to host a second virtual public meeting on Thursday, March 4 at 4 p.m. to provide community members with an additional opportunity to learn more about how the agency is keeping its water safe for drinking water consumption.

“Our top priority is providing safe, reliable water for our customers and our community,” said Matt Stone, SCV Water’s General Manager, in a statement Friday. “We welcome community input as we take steps to  safeguard our water supply and protect the public health and the environment.”

SCV Water plans to address the public health and environmental effects of hazardous substances that have been identified in the Saugus Formation Aquifer, and how installing treatment could allow the return of several wells to service, officials say.

This second meeting is part of the agency’s public comment period on the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) document, which is set to identify removal action objectives to protect human health and the environment. They also plan to comment on the associated Community Involvement Plan (CIP), which works towards enabling meaningful community involvement in local cleanup processes, officials say.

This is a required step in the process to implement further treatment to the valley’s water and seek funding reimbursement from potentially responsible parties for the contamination.

During the meeting, SCV Water’s team is scheduled to provide an overview of project objectives and alternatives for removal of hazardous substances in our water. The documents and virtual meeting details are available here

A few of the primary goals of the EE/CA are to:

  • Satisfy environmental review requirements for removal actions
  • Identify the objectives of a removal action
  • Provide a framework for evaluating and selecting alternative technologies
  • Analyze the alternatives based on effectiveness, ability to implement and cost

The EE/CA addresses the groundwater containing the hazardous substances entering the Saugus Formation and SCV Water’s production wells and ensures that the water produced by these wells satisfy drinking water requirements of the California State Water Resources Control Board and the Division of Drinking Water.

Comments can be submitted by e-mail or letter and should include “Saugus Aquifer CIP, EE/CA Comment” in the subject line. Comments can be sent to Jim Lesserman, Senior Engineer at SCV Water, via email at jleserman@scvwa.org, or sent by hard copy letter via U.S. mail to 26521 Summit Circle, Santa Clarita, CA 91350. All comments must be postmarked or e-mailed by 5 p.m. on March 19.

After the public comment period and public meeting concludes, SCV Water is scheduled to review all comments and address them in a Responsiveness Summary, followed by the issuing of an Action Memorandum, which authorizes and initiates the removal process.
