Sheriff’s Department Reminds Public To Avoid Drinking And Driving During Super Bowl Weekend

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) is advising Santa Clarita Valley residents to enjoy the big game safely at home this year and avoid drinking and driving.

Whether it’s the commercials, halftime show or the game itself, law enforcement officials are cautiously reminding the community that “we are all on the same team when it comes to being safe on Super Bowl Sunday.”

“If you are watching the game at home and plan to have a drink or two, stay at home,” said LASD Sergeant Robert Hill. “Have a family member who hasn’t been drinking go out on your behalf or have your food delivered.”

Super Bowl LV is this Sunday, Feb. 7, and deputies set to have additional officers on patrol over the weekend looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

The department is reminding the public that alcohol is not the only thing that may lead to a DUI, as prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana may also affect the ability to drive safely as well. The LASD is recommending residents to research and understand the effects drugs can have before deciding whether or not to get behind the wheel.

California’s public health guidance advises limiting contact with people you don’t live with as much as possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

According to LASD officials, although many watch parties are expected to be virtual this year, it’s important to plan ahead, designate a sober driver or simply stay home for the night.

Funding for Super Bowl Sunday enforcement is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, officials said.
