Castaic Union School District To Discuss In-Person Learning For TK-2 Students

The Castaic Union School District (CUSD), is set to discuss returning Transitional Kindergarten through second-grade students back to in-person learning at their next board meeting next week.

CUSD is targeting Monday, Feb. 22 as the return date to allow TK-2 students to return to in-person learning, said Steve Doyle, the superintendent for the District.

“At the Jan. 14th meeting of the Board of Trustees, it was approved that Monday, Feb. 22nd was the planned target date for the return of our TK-2 students in the hybrid model,” Doyle said in a letter sent to Castaic parents last week.

The board is scheduled to revisit the topic of returning to in-person class during their next board meeting on Feb. 11 to discuss any changes the State or County may have implemented before putting in concrete the day school will return, Doyle said.

Students who were already in small cohorts that were on campus back in December, were given the green light to return back to school grounds back on Feb. 1.

CUSD is the second district to confirm with KHTS a plan to return younger age classes to resume in-person learning.

There is no targeted date for when students in grades 3-6 can resume in-person learning, due to that being based on the rate of infection of COVID-19, school officials said.

Dr. Barbara Ferrer with the Los Angeles County Department of Health said once the State required threshold of 25 COVID cases per 100,000 in L.A. County is met, school districts are expected to be able to reopen classes for students in grades 3-6 rather than waiting to be in the Red Tier.

CUSD has uploaded their COVID Safety Plan which includes the Covid Prevention Plan, Cal-OSHA Injury Illness Prevention Plan, California Department of Public Health Checklist and COVID-19 Testing Plan.
