L.A. Public Health Continues To Warn Against Post-Super Bowl COVID-19 Surge

Los Angeles County Public Health (LADPH) officials continued to encourage caution among residents ahead of Super Bowl weekend, as average daily COVID-19 deaths continue to be reported at over 200 people per day.

An additional 5,028 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Thursday, along with 239 deaths, according to the LADPH.

The new cases reported Thursday bring the county’s cumulative total to 1,134,338 positive cases of COVID-19 and 17,539 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

On Wednesday, LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer cautioned residents against hosting or attending parties for the upcoming Super Bowl on Sunday, as they are “easy opportunities for the virus to spread.”

“The number of people passing away daily is devastating beyond words. COVID-19 transmission can just as easily occur at house parties, as at businesses not following the straight-forward safety measures,” Ferrer said. “ We all must work together to defend against another surge.”

As of Thursday, there were 4,990 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 27 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Testing results are available for nearly 5,560,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

The Southern California Region has 9.1% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Tuesday, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.
