L.A. County Surpasses 17,000 COVID-19 Deaths

Los Angeles County surpassed 17,000 cumulative COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, over 7,000 of which came in the past month alone.

An additional 3,763 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, along with 205 deaths, according to Los Angeles Department Public Health (LADPH) Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

The new cases reported Monday bring the county’s cumulative total to 1,124,558 positive cases of COVID-19 and 17,057 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

“The County has experienced more than 7,000 new COVID-19 deaths in a little over a month, when on December 30, Public Health reported 10,000 COVID-19 deaths. By comparison, deaths between February and October totaled 7,000,” reads a Tuesday press release.

As of Tuesday, there were 5,259 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 27 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Testing results are available for over 5,500,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

“COVID-19 is responsible for more than 17,000 people passing away and thousands more becoming seriously ill in Los Angeles County. More than 72% of all our COVID-19 deaths occurred in people 65 years old or older,” Ferrer said. “Given the high mortality rates among older individuals, please do not make appointments for vaccinations if it is not your turn. Help us make sure that our most vulnerable elderly residents are prioritized for the limited available vaccine.”

Los Angeles County is showing “promising decreases” in hospitalizations, dropping from a 7-day average of 7,800 on Jan. 27, to 5,053 on Jan. 30, according to L.A. County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis on Monday.

The Southern California Region has 9.1% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Tuesday, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.
