California Highway Patrol Urges Safe Driving On Super Bowl Weekend

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) encourages residents to practice responsible driving and traffic safety this Super Bowl weekend as fans prepare for socially-distant viewings.

CHP officials advise that in the case of travel, residents should adhere to important and responsible safety regulations such as driving sober, avoiding distractions, wearing a seatbelt and not speeding.

“The Super Bowl is one of the most celebrated sporting events of the year, and I am encouraging Californians to celebrate responsibly,” CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray said. “If you choose to drink, do not get behind the wheel. Designate a sober driver.”

In addition to their advisories, CHP officials are expected to be on high alert for impaired drivers over the weekend. An arrest for driving under the influence (DUI) can include alcohol, cannabis, prescription drug, and illegal drug use.

According to the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, four people died in alcohol-related collisions in California on Super Bowl Sunday in 2020, and 120 people were injured. CHP also made more than 300 DUI arrests the same weekend.

CHP encourages residents to call 9-1-1 if they suspect an impaired driver, and be prepared to give the vehicle’s description, locations, license plate number and direction of travel to help keep roads safe.
