Santa Clarita has been placed on flash flood watch by the National Weather Service (NWS), and areas near Lake Hughes have been asked to be ready to evacuate the area.
In anticipation of the rains Santa Clarita is expected to receive in the next several days, the National Weather Service has placed the valley on Flash Flood Watch for Thursday, Jan. 28.
Specifically, the flash flood warning is to be in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday, Jan 29.
There is a 40 percent chance of rain Wednesday night, according to the NWS extended seven-day forecast.
Thursday morning, rain is expected with 80 percent certainty, with a daytime high of 55 degrees and evening low of 43.
The forecast for Thursday evening predicts Santa Clarita to experience “rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 43. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent.”
Wednesday, Los Angeles County Public Works advises residents in Lake Hughes on Ellstree Drive, Lake Hughes Road, and Devere Court to prepare for possible evacuation.

For those in the Lake Hughes evacuation area, the closest shelters are the High Desert MACC in Lancaster and the AV Youth Build in Palmdale. Residents can call 1 (800) 548-6047 for shelter.
California Highway Patrol has been intermittently closing and escorting divers through the Grapevine as the 5 freeway experiences snow.

By noon Wednesday, CHP officials had begun escorting motorists through the Grapevine on both sides of the I-5 Freeway.
The westbound Highway 138 remains closed at 245th Street West, along with Pine Canyon Road and Three Points, and Three Points at Lake Hughes Road.
