GoFundMe Set Up For Survivor Of Fatal Castaic Crash

A GoFundMe has been set up to pay for the medical expenses of Jeremy Smith, who survived a fatal crash in Castaic after being trapped in a truck for over two days.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 23, first responders received reports of a single-vehicle crash near Oak Valley Road and The Old Road in Castaic.

When officials arrived on scene, they found an overturned blue Chevrolet truck. They later confirmed that the truck was found by an individual riding a dirt bike nearby, who heard cries of distress emanating from the vehicle.

“The reporting party advised he had located an overturned vehicle in the hills, west of The Old Road, on Oak Valley Road (approximately 1 mile west on a dirt road),” wrote Officer Josh Greengard, spokesman for the CHP Newhall Office.

Smith was one of two men trapped in the truck. He was rescued and airlifted to a nearby hospital with two fractured legs, while the second occupant, 31-year-old Benjamin Marquez IV of Castaic, was pronounced dead on scene.

Officials later learned that the original crash actually took place on Thursday, Jan. 21, with Smith and Marquez being trapped in the truck since then.

Since then, a GoFundMe page has been created to help Smith pay for medical expenses brought about due to the injuries he sustained in the crash.

“Due to the nature of his injuries that occurred from this unfortunate accident and with pending surgeries, we are trying to raise money to help with his medical expenses,” the page reads. “(Jeremy) is a caring, giving, selfless, first to help others in need and now during this time, he needs our help with these expenses.”

As of Friday afternoon, the page had raised less than $100.

“If you could please find it in your heart to help, any amount is appreciated and is going purely to his medical expenses,” the page reads. “Thank you and God Bless you all.”
