Renovations are underway at the Valencia Ice Station, with officials from the City of Santa Clarita updating both the outside of the station with a new coat of paint and the inside of the station with new lighting and access to high-speed internet.
Drivers passing by the Ice Station off of Smyth Drive may have noticed a “flurry” of activity over the past week, as officials with the City of Santa Clarita are currently renovating the station prior to its “highly anticipated” grand re-opening later this year.
“We have spent a lot of time speaking with user groups who are thrilled about the future of this facility,” said Assistant City Manager Frank Oviedo in a statement Friday. “Their excitement is contagious, and City staff are really enjoying the process of revamping the building and are looking forward to how it will benefit our community – not only those who participate in ice sports, but also as a hub for community gatherings and other events.”
The 93,000 square-foot facility was purchased by the City in August for $14.2 million, and is set to not only host ice-based sports such as hockey, figure skating and curling, but also events such as banquets, conventions and charity galas.
“Complementing the updated color scheme that residents will see on the outside of the building, revamped aesthetics inside give a nod to the location’s legacy and the history of skating and ice sports in Santa Clarita,” reads a statement issued by the City Friday.

However, officials say that the visuals of the station are not the only things being updated. Crews have worked to clean the facility “from top to bottom,” in addition to installing new lighting and setting up high-speed internet access connections, which residents will be able to connect to for free.
“City staff are also working to ensure all systems needed to operate the facility work properly to create a high quality, safe experience for all users,” Friday’s statement reads.
The City is currently in the process of selecting a management company to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility once it reopens later this year.
“So think of it as an event center, ice skating center, a combination of both,” Santa Clarita Mayor Bill Miranda said in an interview back in December. “That’s going to happen, we’re hoping it’ll happen late first quarter, but it might not be until second quarter.”
City officials are set to introduce a new graphic look and brand to “solidify the facility as one of the top community amenities throughout Southern California,” in the coming weeks.
