Suspect Arrested For Assault On Peace Officer After Nearly Striking Deputy With Vehicle

A suspect was arrested for assault on a peace officer Saturday after nearly striking a deputy with his vehicle after fleeing from a traffic stop earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, Jan. 6, at about 7:10 p.m., deputies responded to the 28300 block of Nicholas Circle in Saugus regarding a suspicious person in a vehicle call, according to Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Upon arrival, deputies identified the vehicle matching the description of the vehicle listed in the call parked on Nicholas Circle,” Arriaga said. “As one of the deputies approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the vehicle began to flee, almost striking the deputy.”

Deputies were unable to locate the suspect during a search, however, a short period later they were notified via another call for service of an abandoned vehicle matching the vehicle description of the suspect, according to Arriaga.

“The vehicle was located on Spire Court (and) Stratus Street in Saugus,” Arriaga said. “The suspect was not located.”

On Saturday, about 9:43 a.m., deputies patrolling Chestnut Street and 9th Street in Newhall observed a vehicle driving with an expired registration, according to investigators.

“As deputies approached the vehicle in their patrol vehicle, two male adults exited the vehicle and began running on Chestnut Street in an attempt to flee,” Arriaga said.

Deputies conducted a search of the vicinity and located the males in the carport of a nearby apartment complex.

“Deputies saw a traffic violation, they ran past a stop sign and then immediately started running,” said Sgt. Jepson with the station at the time of the incident. “They pulled up really fast, got out and started running from (deputies).”

The male driver, 30 years old, was arrested for driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent and unlicensed driver, according to arrest logs.

Alfredo Vargas, 31, listed as a transient in Newhall, was arrested for assault on a peace offer, based on a previous incident, according to Arriaga.

Vargas was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in lieu of $50,000 bail.
