A Red Flag Warning that was issued in the Santa Clarita weather forecast has been extended through Saturday, with the possibility for Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) still in place.
The Red Flag Warning issued Thursday afternoon was previously expected to end Friday. However, due to continuing gusty Santa Ana Winds, the warning has been extended until 4 p.m. Saturday, said Kristen Stewart, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Winds are expected to be out of the northeast, with speeds of around 15 to 20 mph with gusts to around 50 mph in parts of Santa Clarita, according to officials.
Humidity levels are also expected to remain below 10 percent causing “very dry” conditions resulting in a risk for brush fires.
Due to the low humidity levels and gusty winds, brush fires can be difficult to contain if they ignite in these conditions, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
As a result, Southern California Edison (SCE) officials have already started to shut power off to parts of Canyon Country and Agua Dulce, according to SCE’s website.
Parts of Castaic and Val Verde are currently being monitored for potential PSPS, and are expected to be monitored until Wednesday at midnight, according to SCE.
