Homicide Detectives Investigating Canyon Country Shooting In Sand Canyon

Homicide detectives are investigating a Canyon Country shooting involving a retired deputy on Monday in a gated Sand Canyon neighborhood.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a male adult, according to Deputy Tracy Koerner with the Sheriff’s Information Bureau

The reported shooting in Canyon Country occurred on the 15900 block of Warm Springs Drive in Santa Clarita, on Monday, Jan. 11, at about 2:20 p.m.

“Deputies from the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station responded to a call regarding a traffic incident at the location,” Koerner said. “Shortly after, the call was updated to shots fired.”

Upon arrival, deputies learned that a red Toyota Tacoma truck had collided with a security gate and the suspect, using his vehicle, forced his way into a gated community, according to investigators.

The pickup truck continued into the residential community and stopped in front of a residence on the 15900 block of Warm Springs Drive, according to detectives.

“Shortly after, two individuals approached the vehicle to contact the suspect, who was still seated in the driver’s seat of the pickup truck,” Koerner said.

During the contact, the suspect produced a handgun. One of the individuals, a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, also produced a handgun, and a shooting occurred. The suspect was struck twice in the upper torso, according to investigators.

Shortly thereafter, Santa Clarita deputies arrived and took the suspect into custody. He was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was listed in critical condition, according to Koerner

A handgun was recovered at the scene, which is believed to belong to the suspect.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information released as of Tuesday morning.
